PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION (PSHE)

At The Huntspill Primary Academies, PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We aim to provide our children with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community. Children learn to understand and respect our differences and diversity so that they are prepared for life in our ever changing world.

Our PSHE curriculum both enhances and is supported by other curriculum areas such as RE and E-Safety  and our whole school learning values. Our curriculum reflects the importance we place on our children’s mental health and well-being, and we work collaboratively with our ELSA Mentor to ensure our knowledge and resources are shared. Through our PSHE education, we believe we can enrich our children’s education and help them to become caring, respectful and confident individuals.

We deliver Personal, Social, Health Education using Jigsaw – the mindful approach to PSHE. Through using Jigsaw our children acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. It develops the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society, and the global community.

Jigsaw lessons have a “strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health…they also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.”  Jigsaw.

Jigsaw is implemented through whole class lessons focusing on different topics each term. Children are supported and encouraged to use the skills they are developing throughout their school day, and make links to other areas of their learning.  Each class documents their learning journey in a ‘PSHE Big Book’ which provides a snapshot of the wonderful activities and discussions which take place in each lesson.

There are six themes throughout the year which the whole school follows:

Term 1

Term 2

Term 3

Term 4

Term 6

At The Huntspill Primary Academies, we have a very clear learning journey in PSHE which constantly makes links and builds on knowledge from previous years. Our dedicated staff model and promote kindness in a safe, open and positive learning environment based on trusting relationships which encourages children to talk confidently, honestly and respectfully about a wide range of personal, social and health topics.  We aim to ensure all information is relevant and realistic so that our children are provided with the best possible preparation for life.
